Ember of the Ninth Vale

★★★★★ 4.7 Editor rating

Ember of the Ninth Vale is a proper old-school role-player squeezed onto a phone without losing its soul. You lead a small band of misfits across a fading kingdom, fighting turn-based battles that reward patience over button mashing. Positioning matters, elemental weaknesses matter, and healing at the wrong moment can lose you a fight.

The writing carries it. Party members bicker, change their minds and occasionally refuse to do what you tell them, which makes the world feel lived-in. Save points are generous and battles can be sped up, both smart choices for mobile play.

It's not short — expect twenty-plus hours — but it respects your time with autosaves and a clear quest log. If you miss the era of portable RPGs, this scratches that itch.
